WANTS VERSUS NEEDS..................

A lot of us have inspiration boards....those things we want to acquire or achieve....or we use them for motivation in various projects.

The above board has a lovely house in France....a beautiful woman...a ticket to the theatre...you get the picture.

Thus the reason for this post.  I believe many of us, myself included, confuse wants with needs.

I would LOVE to have a house in France....but do I NEED one...I think not.

I would LOVE to be BEAUTIFUL all the time....but is it really necessary.....no.

Theatre tickets....I love the theatre...but do I have to attend EVERY show that comes to town....NOT.

So this year as my resolution.....I am resolved to purchased ONLY THINGS I NEED.  Items necessary for my survival...physically, spiritually and emotionally....That means an end to impulse spending and really thinking about what I am purchasing.

This is my New Year's Resolution.....
I'll let you know how I do.

hugs from me to you,

Jo

  1. oh, do let me know how you do. I did that for years. Then I gave in when I realized this house was actually "home"...so I began buying extra pretty things, but I agree we don't need them. It can be done, I believe you can do it. hugs, lady

  3. What a wise and inspiring post, Jo! Learning to distinguish between wants and needs is so important to our happiness and well-being. Good for you!

  4. Jo, I think there be a lesson here for everyone. Things being what they are I take this to heart. There are many today who do not have their needs, much less their wants.

I am excited for you, and excited for me, and for each person who reads your blog.

    Thank you, for sharing.

  5. Jo, I have been asking myself
    that same question,but only for
    the past couple of years.

It began after Jim died and I had
to move to a much smaller apt. I
found so many things that once
meant something to me had to go.

I gave so many things away to
whom ever wanted them. I put
signs on them, free and left
furniture in front of our place
and they would be gone in a matter
    of hours.

The lesson sunk in and now I
only try to buy what I need
or someone in my family needs.

    Great blog.

    hugs and blessings
    Sharon

  6. Good for you! Consumer society deliberately teaches people to blur the distinction between wants and needs so that we will consume crap endlessly. Thinking seriously about what is a "want" and what is a "need" takes our power back!

  7. The subject of wants verses needs is something I have been pondering lately myself. It's not always easy to restrain yourself in a world that cries, "But you simply must have this!"

    Great post!

  8. I have done the same thing Jo, decided to focus on simple and that includes only getting items needed as opposed to items wanted. Since we are going to do a bit of re-modeling this year, I want to be sure to stay focused on those things we need in order to simplify life a bit. Life gets a bit chaotic when we surround it with things, so this year I'm hoping to remove that element. Best of everything to you in 2013. Love & Hugs, xoxo

  9. That is actually a Great resolution. Think of all the money we (me included for sure) on buying things we certainly don't need....just looks good to us at the time.
    Our needs are often simple
our Wants get out of hand and usually not beneficial to us at all in the long run

  10. Want vs need has been a large part of my life for a several years-it has served me well but do I ever just argue with myself about a want-Oh yeah...
Good luck-I believe it's a right path to take.

  11. Jo this is a wonderful idea...good luck...I'm interested to see how you go...I think I could do with a little of this too!

  12. I do agree with this resolution - I made it myself some years ago. I was jaded by looking at the mountains of undesirable objects in shops, antiques and vintage fairs etc. and also inspired by William Morris who said "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful"
Trouble is, I think that this has made me buy more...

TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY......I'M GOING TO HAVE A WONDERFUL BIRTHDAY MONTH!!!

I turn 67 today.....and actually I feel better as the years accumulate.  Since I've gotten older I actually have decided that I will celebrate each day during the month of October...just being grateful for being healthy and alive.   I hope each one of you who follow this little blog of mine celebrate each day along with me.... Here are some of the things I have planned for my birthday month: 1.  Listing our current home the end of the first week in November.  We are pretty excited to be moving into a little smaller spot as it means less work and maintenance.  We just want to be able to live more and work less.  Although we still have not found our new spot.....we know it is out there.   2.  Taking a 15 day cruise on the Rhine from Amsterdam to Budapest.  We will visit 5 countries along the way.  One of the stops will be in the place I was born....Nuremberg, Germany.  My  family  left Germany right after the war...when I was quite young.  Memories are almos

PUTTING ON MY GYPSY SHOES......................

Bo Bunny Paper Collection Well.......the coach is packed...the laundry done in the condo....and we will be on our way tomorrow. I often do feel like a gypsy moving from one spot to another....and each year my gratitude grows as I am able to continue this lifestyle. I truly would love to "do up" my coach in Gypsy Style...but alas....not too practical as things probably would be flying all over as we traveled down the road.  (O: But.....a girl can dream.....can't she? ~~~ My suitcase is packed with memories To be opened further down the road When my caravan must be halted The bag waits to be opened Stories to be told and shared Like the gypsy's of so long ago But for now....the wheels keep turning And my case grows larger still Waiting for the day..I must be stopped   And my heart, to the brim, will be filled Hugs from me to you, Jo Gypsy photos:  Electric Gipsyland on Flickr

HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND A MERRY CHRISTMAS

This is a picture of our little tree this year.  Each year our trees seem to be smaller, a function of our getting older and just wanting to deal with less stuff.  I'm sure a few of you feel them same.  Although it does seem to be a little weird that we want to deal with fewer Christmas decorations and give each other MORE STUFF in the way of presents under the tree.   Ahhh...being human is such a quandary sometimes!                                          MERRY CHRISTMAS                                                          Jo
