MY GRAMA'S SCISSORS............................

"Get happiness out of your work....or you may never know what happiness is"
Elbert Hubbard

This simple object made quick work of the task at hand......whether darning or mending..her concentration was always on the activity in front of her.

No Net-flix or television show to occupy her mind....she was present.

Single minded in completing one garment after another.....totally in the moment....mindful of her action.

I think my grandma must have been a Buddha.

In this jittery busy world of ours perhaps each of us would benefit from sewing on a button, mending a garment
or darning a sock.

I know, I for one, plan on picking up my scissors and needle and thread in order to enrich my soul.

Hugs gentle friends,

Jo

  1. Oh my, this was lovely, I think your grandma was a Buddha too. Spiritual awareness is even more amazing when the recipient is guided only by their personal focus. Doing a job that needs to be done, double good therapy.

    Wonder goodness of sharing.

  2. I come from quite a long line of ladies who love to sew. Sadly I am not one of them. Sewing makes me very nervous. I can pick up a pencil, paint brush or a piece of chalk though and spend some much fun and peaceful time. This was a lovely post. Hugs sweet Jo.

  3. I think your Grandma must of taught you many things. I wish sometimes I was more focused, but I usually have several irons in the fire at one time. It's so neat that you have your Grandma's sissors. To be able to use something that she used many times and to be reminded of her every time you use them.

    hugs,
    Danielle

  5. I'm glad I was taught to sew by hand as a young girl. I still love to do embroidery and your post reminds me...I have Christmas samplers to work on!

Hope you are having a good weekend, Jo!

  9. Oh my grandmother was a seamstress and created lovely things. Clothing, hooked rugs, tapestry...you name it she did it. Even won awards for her creations. My cherished possession is a gown she made for my father as an infant. Oh yes I loved my Grandma's scissors!
    Hugs~

  11. Jo that was such a lovely post and I too so wish sometimes that I could have the peace my grandmother had in her life, working on the simple tasks that kept her family cared for. I have my grandmother's darning mushroom and holding it and feeling the worn smooth wood fills me with comfort in my crazy world.
Maybe you have given us a lesson today we should take to heart, thanks...

  12. A lot of wisdom is gained from doing simple things. And I don't mean playing a game on your phone. How wonderful to have these 'tools' that your Grandmother used and treasured.

  13. Dear Jo... your Gramma was Wise... being present in the Moment brings great Peace and developes Patience because it gives you focus for WHATEVER you are doing, no matter how mundane. Thanks for stopping by with encouragement and sweet words... yes, the only time I want my plate to be full is at a Buffet! *Winks*

  14. It would seem sometimes, that ther is very little we do that we are totally "connected" too, as there is always something else happening at the same time, muti-tasking on steroids.
Reminds me of a book I read called Plain and Simple. About the Amish people, and how they connect with the tasks at hand
if you are doing dishes....DO THE DISHES, without making your mind busy with a gazillion other things, and already moving on (in your mind) to your next "awaiting" project
    something to think about eh.

how special for you to have your Grandma's scissors. When you hold them, you must feel her loving hands.

  15. I feel the same. We are so busy these days with our minds in the past or the future. I do so much enjoy just washing dishes, or folding laundry. They are brilliant moments to be present in.
Thank you for your post from the heart!
    Hugs,
    Terri

  16. I love darning.... always have. But, guess what? I can no longer find any darning wool. I've searched everywhere.... remember the little skeins of different colours ? a thing of the past now I suppose...like so many other great things.....sigh..... I have tried other yarns...but, too fat.... too stretchy...etc.... nothing so far. I still have lots of socks with little holes...just waiting ...in case.....

TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY......I'M GOING TO HAVE A WONDERFUL BIRTHDAY MONTH!!!

I turn 67 today.....and actually I feel better as the years accumulate.  Since I've gotten older I actually have decided that I will celebrate each day during the month of October...just being grateful for being healthy and alive.   I hope each one of you who follow this little blog of mine celebrate each day along with me.... Here are some of the things I have planned for my birthday month: 1.  Listing our current home the end of the first week in November.  We are pretty excited to be moving into a little smaller spot as it means less work and maintenance.  We just want to be able to live more and work less.  Although we still have not found our new spot.....we know it is out there.   2.  Taking a 15 day cruise on the Rhine from Amsterdam to Budapest.  We will visit 5 countries along the way.  One of the stops will be in the place I was born....Nuremberg, Germany.  My  family  left Germany right after the war...when I was quite young.  Memories are almos

PUTTING ON MY GYPSY SHOES......................

Bo Bunny Paper Collection Well.......the coach is packed...the laundry done in the condo....and we will be on our way tomorrow. I often do feel like a gypsy moving from one spot to another....and each year my gratitude grows as I am able to continue this lifestyle. I truly would love to "do up" my coach in Gypsy Style...but alas....not too practical as things probably would be flying all over as we traveled down the road.  (O: But.....a girl can dream.....can't she? ~~~ My suitcase is packed with memories To be opened further down the road When my caravan must be halted The bag waits to be opened Stories to be told and shared Like the gypsy's of so long ago But for now....the wheels keep turning And my case grows larger still Waiting for the day..I must be stopped   And my heart, to the brim, will be filled Hugs from me to you, Jo Gypsy photos:  Electric Gipsyland on Flickr

HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND A MERRY CHRISTMAS

This is a picture of our little tree this year.  Each year our trees seem to be smaller, a function of our getting older and just wanting to deal with less stuff.  I'm sure a few of you feel them same.  Although it does seem to be a little weird that we want to deal with fewer Christmas decorations and give each other MORE STUFF in the way of presents under the tree.   Ahhh...being human is such a quandary sometimes!                                          MERRY CHRISTMAS                                                          Jo
